Rediscovering Slobodkina: A Pioneer of American Abstraction

Date(s):  January 26, 2010 thru April 18, 2010

Esphyr Slobodkina (1908-2002) was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists and a popular author and illustrator. She participated in the 1937 landmark exhibition of abstract art at Squibb Gallery with other noted artists including Josef Albers, Burgoyne Diller and Ibram Lassaw.

Rediscovering Slobodkina: A Pioneer of American Abstraction is a retrospective of the artist’s work and includes her noted abstractions from the 1930s through the 1950s as well as two original 1939 Caps for Sale book illustrations.

The exhibition also highlights her sculpture and assemblages, including Sheldon’s 1939 piece titled Sailor’s Wife.

The exhibition is organized by the Slobodkina Foundation in association with The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, N.Y., and will include an exhibition catalogue.

Sheldon will present a program in connection
with the exhibition during the community's celebration of the Week of the Young Child:
