FAQ about Renting Sheldon Museum of Art

This page will help answer some basic questions about renting spaces at the Sheldon Museum of Art.

Q: Whom do I contact to book a space?

A: The event operations manager will be your primary point of contact from your first inquiry to the moment your event ends. We cannot offer event planning services, but will happily work with someone of your choice. Contact Rachel McConnell, event operations manager, at or 402-472-1170.

Q: How much does it cost to rent a space at Sheldon?

A: It depends on which room (or rooms) you would like to use and the type of event you want to hold. Please note that Sheldon's rental fees do not include the direct costs of catering, alcohol, servers, rental equipment, additional Sheldon staff (if needed), etc. Please contact our event operations manager directly to find out what fees might be applicable to your event.

Q: How is renting a museum different than other types of venues?

A: Sheldon Museum of Art is a unique building with an internationally recognized collection of art. It is an architecturally significant structure and was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places -- which makes events held at the museum particularly special. In order to insure the Sheldon remains a treasured Lincoln landmark for years to come, we have implemented a few policies for the safety of our guests and to preserve the building and Sheldon's collection. Our event operations manager will happily share these with you when you make an inquiry.

Q. Am I allowed to serve alcohol at my event?

A. Yes. You are welcome to offer alcoholic beverages to your guests. An exception is red wine, which regrettably stains our historic building. If you are planning to serve alcohol, you must complete the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's (UNL) Alcohol Services Permit Application and submit it 45 days prior to the date of your event. This is compulsory for all events taking place at a UNL facility where alcohol is served. The alcohol provider must be from UNL's list of approved licensed beverage caterers.

Q. Do you require a specific caterer be used for my event?

A. You may hire a caterer or food supplier that suits your needs. Because the museum is a landmark building, we encourage your caterer to meet with our event operations manager to become familiar with the Sheldon's facilities. For example, there is a small area where caterers can stage temporary warming equipment, but there is no full-service catering kitchen. The event operations manager can also give you the names of several caterers already familiar with Sheldon's facilities.

Q. I want to pop the question at Sheldon. Can you help me make it a special surprise?

A. Yes! We would be happy to work with you on how to make your engagement a memorable one at the museum. Contact Sheldon’s event operations manager to discuss logistics and possibilities.

Q: Will the galleries be open during my event?

A: Yes. Having them open helps make your event at Sheldon a unique one. In fact, if you would like one of our trained docents to lead gallery tours for your attendees, please make the request to the event operations manager.

Q: Can an artwork be moved to accommodate my event? Can I request a specific painting or sculpture to be on display?

A: Due to the complexities of safely moving works of art, we are unable to accommodate these kinds of requests. But the event operations manager will be able to tell you about the exhibitions that will be on display and which sculptures will be in the Great Hall during your event.
