The large-scale, figurative works in this exhibition focus attention on artists who use their subjects as both the reason to paint and the embodiment of historical or personal moments. Although stylistically diverse, they share a common attention to the figure that enables them to set scenes, tell stories, and convey emotions. Paintings by Aaron Douglas, Shoshanna Weinberger, Robert Henri, Yinka Shonibare, Walt Kuhn, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and others are featured.

Exhibition support is provided by Roseann and Phil Perry, Rhonda Seacrest, Donna Woods and Jon Hinrichs, and Hixson-Lied Endowment.
