Josef Sudek, Photographs

  • Josef Sudek, Last Roses.

Sheldon Museum of Art celebrates the work of Czech photographer Josef Sudek (1896–1976) with a gallery installation in the spring and summer of 2018. In 1968, Sheldon was the first institution in the US to exhibit Sudek’s photographs, subsequently acquiring twenty-six prints for its permanent collection.

Sudek’s atmospheric images of landscapes, still lifes, and architectural studies taken in and around the Czech capital possess a moody, lyrical quality, which has earned him the sobriquet “the poet of Prague” and recognition as one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century.

Sheldon exhibits this selection of photographs in conjunction with Prague Spring 50, a symposium presented by the Department of History at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
