Demos kratos. Together these two Greek words, which translate to people and power or rule respectively, are the origins of democracy. Featuring works that support political campaigns, advocate for voting rights, and capture the energy of elections, Voting is People Power encourages individuals to actively engage in the process of democracy.

This exhibition was organized by Erin Hanas, PhD, curator for academic and campus engagement.

Big Ten Art Museums: A Call to Vote

Sheldon joins art museums on other Big Ten campuses in encouraging active engagement in the process of democracy. Together the museums have created a deck of cards with images and prompts to spark conversations on civic life, community, democracy, identity, and more.

The art and conversation deck “What does it mean to be American?” was designed by the University of Michigan Museum of Art, with contributions from Chazen Museum of Art (University of Wisconsin), Hammer Museum (University of California, Los Angeles), Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (University of Oregon), Krannert Art Museum (University of Illinois), MSU Broad Art Museum (Michigan State University), Palmer Museum of Art (Penn State University), Sheldon Museum of Art (University of Nebraska), Stanley Museum of Art (University of Iowa), University of Maryland Art Gallery, and Weisman Art Museum (University of Minnesota).
