Art in social studies education supports critical thinking

Aaron Johnson, assistant professor of teaching, learning, and teacher education, prepares his students to teach by encouraging them to consider different pedagogical practices, learning theories, and instructional designs. His class visited Sheldon to explore how visual literacy and working with nontraditional texts (i.e., works of art) can be part of social science teaching.

In preparing for the visit, each student selected a specific teaching or visual thinking strategy to use or adapt in the creation of a thematic learning module centered on a work of art displayed at the museum.
