About Torn Notebook

In 1992, artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen were commissioned by Sheldon Museum of Art to create a sculpture for both the city and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln communities to enjoy. During the artists' visit to Nebraska to plan their work, they sketched potential designs in notebooks, tearing out pages with various ideas and ripping discarded notebooks in half. Their working method ultimately inspired the form of the sculpture they produced: a torn spiral-bound notebook with giant, fluttering pages.
