Rent Sheldon Museum of Art

Sheldon Museum of Art is one of Nebraska's most architecturally stunning venues. Whether hosting a reception for 100 in the Great Hall or a meeting for 10 in the Olga Nielsen Sheldon Room, you and your guests will enjoy a memorable experience in this celebrated historic venue.

Outside of all major holidays and home football game days, areas of the museum are available to rent seven days a week from 8:00am to 11:00pm. Sheldon’s events team will serve as your primary contact for booking a space, coordinating with outside vendors, and making sure your event runs smoothly. Great Hall

Sheldon's Great Hall is a grand, two-story atrium flooded with natural light, providing an elegant backdrop for large or small affairs. The Great Hall is best suited for dinners, cocktail receptions, ceremonies, and corporate parties.


Capacity
  • 136 guests for a seated meal
  • 160-180 guests for a cocktail-style reception with mixed seating
  • 200 guests for a seated presentation or ceremony
  • Capacities will vary based on the placement of sculpture at the time of your event.
Guidelines

Our events team will share a complete list of guidelines as your booking is considered. Here are some highlights:

  • No red wine or punch, dark sauces or berries, or beer kegs allowed in the museum or surrounding grounds.
  • Food and drink must remain in the Great Hall and cannot be taken into the individual galleries. No open beverage containers are permitted to leave the building.


Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium

The auditorium is ideal for concerts, lectures, film screenings, and other events which require audio/visual equipment.


Capacity
  • Fixed seating for 294
  • Off-stage, private dressing rooms are available for performers and presenters.
Guidelines

Our events team will share a complete list of guidelines as your booking is considered. Here are some highlights:

  • Food and drink must remain in the Great Hall and cannot be taken into the individual galleries or the auditorium.
  • Backpacks and other large bags are restricted in the auditorium in order to adhere to fire code and for the protection of the art. You may store these items in our Visitor Services Center while attending the event.
  • Sheldon’s A/V equipment is included in the rental fee. For A/V needs beyond microphones, an A/V technician will be brought in to support the event at an additional cost.


Olga Nielsen Sheldon Board Room

The Olga Nielsen Sheldon Room is an intimate space, perfect for meetings or small receptions. Food may be catered in this area. A projector and screen are available for presentations.


Capacity
  • Recommended capacity for comfort is 15-20 guests
Guidelines

  • Food and drink must remain in the board room and cannot be taken into the individual galleries.


West Lawn and Plaza

The areas immediately to the west of Sheldon’s main building are available for outdoor events.


Capacity
  • 250-300 guests, theater-style
  • 150-175 guests for a seated meal
Guidelines
  • No alcoholic beverages can be served on the West Lawn or Plaza. Alcohol may be served in the Sunken Sculpture Court (see next section).
  • Restrooms are open during public hours. For an additional fee, the building can remain open after public hours for restroom use and to view the artwork in the galleries.
  • Though security is present throughout the day, we are not responsible for any damage or theft in the outdoor space.
  • Sheldon’s inventory of furniture is not available for outdoor use. The events team can connect you with vendors who supply tables, chairs, and anything else you may need. All items must be removed at the end of the event.
  • Electrical access is available.
  • The events team can offer inclement weather backup plans.

Sunken Sculpture Court

The sculpture court on the south side of the museum is ideal for food and beverage receptions.


Capacity
  • 250 guests for a seated meal
  • 325 guests with mixed seating
Guidelines

General Information

What makes a Sheldon event unique?

Sheldon is foremost an academic art museum housing a renowned collection of nearly 13,000 works in diverse media. Rental events held during public hours shall consider visitors’ use and enjoyment of our facilities. Unless otherwise specified, galleries will be open during your event so that guests may experience the whole museum. Due to the complexities of safely moving works of art, we are unable to accommodate requests for adding or removing certain works from the galleries or Great Hall.

How much does it cost to book Sheldon?
  • Fees differ based on the room (or rooms) you want to utilize, the type and scope of your event, and the length of time you need the space. Contact the events team for a personalized estimate.
  • In addition to a rental fee, you will also be responsible for staffing costs. Sheldon staff will always be on site during your event to help things run smoothly and to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
  • For all indoor events, the cost of your rental includes use of our tables, chairs, and other furnishings.
  • The cost of renting Sheldon does not include: catering fees, linens, décor, and furniture needed to supplement our existing inventory.
Does Sheldon require specific caterers?
  • You are welcome to work with professional caterers of your choosing. The events team is happy to supply a list of recommendations.
  • For alcohol services, the University of Nebraska specifies a certain list of vendors. Our staff will help you connect with those suppliers.
