Sheldon in Focus: The New York School
January 24, 2024 through July 7, 2024Roseann and Philip L. Perry Gallery, first floor
Beginning in the 1940s, nestled within the drafty lofts and studio apartments of Lower Manhattan, a group of avant-garde artists experimented with painting and sculpture, resulting in the development of a new American art movement. They embraced European avant-gardism and the monumentality of Mexican muralism, creating work centered on emotional expression, gestural brushwork, materiality, color, and scale.
This exhibition was organized by Christian Wurst, associate curator for exhibitions.
Exhibition support is provided by Ameritas, D F Dillon Foundation, Roseann and Phil Perry, and Rhonda Seacrest.
