Loving, Untitled
Alvin Loving was among the second generation of African American artists to produce abstract works. He became a prominent proponent of geometric abstraction during the 1960s, a period when many African American artists felt social pressure to produce works that reflected the black experience. Although Loving considered Hans Hofmann to be his most important influence, his cubes have been compared to Josef Albers’s rectangles within rectangles, and his interest in illusionism recalls the work of Frank Stella.Alvin LovingAmerican1935Detroit, MI2005New York, NY
