Sheldon Member Tailgate

Saturday, September 7, 2024 - 5:00pm to 6:30pm

Celebrate the new football season with a tailgate before the game against Colorado on September 7. Sheldon’s Great Hall will be a cool spot for tailgate fare, a cash bar, and a great view of the pride of all Nebraska—the Cornhusker Marching Band—running through its halftime show outside Sheldon one hour before the game.

Explore art from new and diverse perspectives with University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty and Erin Hanas, curator for academic and campus engagement.

Join Erin and Theresa Catalano, professor of teaching, learning, and teacher education, for a novel exploration of one of Sheldon’s best-known works, Edward Hopper’s Room in New York.

Civil Conversations

As part of Lincoln’s Welcoming Week 2024, Sheldon Museum of Art joins the Office of Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement in presenting Civil Conversations, a time to build a better understanding with fellow students and community members from all different backgrounds through respectful dialogue about civic engagement and voting.

Participants will tour the exhibition Voting is People Power and then engage in facilitated conversations with one another. Afterwards, make a “vote” button and stop by the Husker Vote Coalition table to register to vote and to learn more about the 2024 elections. Light refreshments provided.

Pre-Performance Gallery Talk on Artist Jacob Lawrence

In conjunction with the Lied Center for Performing Arts, Sheldon Museum of Art presents a gallery talk on artist Jacob Lawrence by Christian Wurst, associate curator for exhibitions. The talk immediately precedes Step Afrika’s Lied Center performance of “The Migration,” based on Lawrence’s iconic paintings "The Migration Series."

Politics, Romance, and a Lost Manuscript: Recovering the Secret History of Key West

Wednesday, October 30, 2024 - 5:30pm to 7:00pm

Sheldon Museum of Art will host an interdisciplinary discussion of the groundbreaking new volume Tears and Flowers: A Poet of Migration in Old Key West (University Press of Florida). A rare glimpse into the history of the Cuban community in Key West in the early twentieth century, this book makes the poetry of Feliciano Castro (1892–1982) available in English for the first time.

Translator and co-editor Rhi Johnson and six University of Nebraska–Lincoln professors, including Joy Castro, the poet's granddaughter, will discuss the impact and significance of this contribution to U.S. and Caribbean history and literature.
