Carmen Lomas GarzaCarmen Lomas Garza created Una Tarde / One Summer Afternoon at the very end of the exhibition Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation, 1965–1985, which toured nationally between 1991 and 1993. This show was the first to be organized by Chicanas and Chicanos in collaboration with mainstream art institutions. Echoing the vision of cultural community advocated by this exhibition, Una Tarde portrays an identifiable scene of Mexican American heritage and daily life. Here, Lomas Garza weaves a story of childhood, transitions, and a swirl of cultural representations from both sides of the border, encasing them all in one sunny afternoon.
